Jazz Influenced Electronic Music

Kevin Yost- Future Flashback CD

"truth be told" MP3

I just got the new Kevin Yost cd in the mail and it is REALLY good. If you don't know who Yost is, check him out. He is one of my favorite house producers with an extensive jazz background which shines through on his records. He also is an amazing DJ and has been dj'ing since he was like 11 or 12 years old. Some of his tracks have a jazzy sound packed with live instrumentation, others are dark and techy dancefloor burners impeccably produced. He also just finished a tour with a live band where they played live jazz and house.

his new artist album is labeled as "Jazz Influenced Electronic Music" which instantly made me want to buy it. What surprised me, in a good way, is that it is not just "jazzy house" like so much of the jazz influenced stuff out there. This is REAL jazz with great solos and a lot of improvisation. Some parts have a Miles Davis-esque solo, other parts Chick Corea style riffs, all of which played by Yost. Many tracks have a clasic, straight ahead jazz sound which you don't hear quite as much in electronic music. The result is classic jazz instrumentation and arrangements combined with modern production techniques. He says in the liner notes that he wanted to evolve as a musician and producing a jazz album as a one-man band is the proof.

Kevinyost.com says:
"Kevin Yost spent the past year in intense musical reflection, juxtaposing the modern sounds of electronica with classic jazz (his original passion). "Future Flashback" is the next level of this brilliant fusion created by Kevin. His first full length album since the 2000 release of "Road Less Traveled" this 14 track album will feature live orchestration as well as a wide variety of studio collaborations. Kevin has promised to make this his best yet and it is expected to be an undoubted masterpiece. Sax & Flute - Howard Burns Vocals - Kristen Mountz"

Kraftwerk still rules

Kraftwerk LIVE- Minimum Maximum 2cd set 2005

"Planet Of Visions" (Ljubljana) MP3

A couple weeks ago I had my mind blown by Kraftwerk again in Chicago. The show was absolutely unbelievable musically and also visually. The men who are machines do as much as possible to look like they are doing nothing. They stand on stage, motionless and expressionless, as the beats peak and the visuals mesmerized the crowd. At one point a screen came down and when it went back up there were four actual robots on stage playing instead of humans. What I loved about the show is how every song was remixed to sound fresh. Some of the songs are 30+ years old so to hear a modern techno edge was cool. Kraftwerk are the originators, the grandfathers, the dinosaurs of electronic music. If it wasn't for them, the early 1980's in Detroit would have sounded a lot different.

Odd that they have been around forever and had not released an official live album until now but here it is- the double LIVE cd set- "Minimum Maximum". The cd's are packed full of songs taken from various venues on their 2004 World Tour. All of the songs are here in their full, tweaked out glory. I read that a double DVD set is also coming but I could not find a release date. That will be huge!

Shpongle Live

Shpongle Live -Eilat Desert Israel 10/24/2002

This one won't be up very long so grab it right away. The man, the myth, the legend Simon Posford along with Raja Ram are Shpongle. If you have never heard Shpongle, I highly suggest checking out their albums. The first, "Are You Shpongled?" is an album I consider to be one of the best electronic albums ever produced. It is an extremely influential album and it doesn't sound like anything that has ever been recorded. There is so much going on that when listening with headphones your brain feels like it is on a roller coaster. "Tales of the Inexpressible" had a much more tribal and ethnic vibe to it with many live instruments but still with all of the crazy studio trickery the first album had. The new album is "Nothing Lasts...but Nothing is Lost" and it is coming shortly. This live set is great and it is different than the studio albums with a stripped down, dubby sound.

late Link day

I asked for links and was slow posting them because I felt that just adding a link wasnt enough. I got a number of emails that were very detailed and with great music so rather than just listing now, I will try to do a more in depth post about a few of them. I still included some links here but I will add more about quite a few. Stuff like The Numb Project deserves more than just a link! Also a bunch of mew mp3's will be added shortly. Cheers

Here are some of the random links people sent:

People Places and Things

Slide Five- People Places and Things

"Polestar" MP3

I just downloaded this album from emusic.com after a long hiatus. I have always dug these guys ever since I picked up their funky first album almost 10 years ago. "People Places and Things" is an amazing album and those basslines stick in my head for days after listening to them. This album is all live instruments and Dave Warrin is AMAZING on that Juno bass and keys.

allmusic said:
Like so many groups that started with the "acid jazz" sound, Slide Five moved into the electronic realm. This album mixes the live sound of the first album with electronics, creating trance-like, danceable tracks. Some of the standout material on the album comes from the previously unreleased EP Flash, namely the gumption-filled track "Heavy Rotation." Dave Warrin's keys and Guy Gershoni's subtle percussion work on "11 O'Clock" would make Herbie Hancock proud. Smooth drum'n'bass tracks like "Inhaler" and the space jazz of "KC Doppler" keep the listener hooked. Sometimes sacrificing groove for experimentation, it remains a vital and innovative soundtrack for space-age hipsters.

Octo Muck

Baby Mammoth- Octo Muck
"Finale" MP3

Ever since I got the Fabric 18 DJ mix in the mail I have been on a Baby Mammoth and Momma Gravy bender. If you don't have the mix OR if you have no idea what I am even talking about when I say Fabric, do yourself a favor and check out the Fabric website. Baby Mammoth must drive the record store clerks nuts because it is so hard to classify their style. I saw someone online call it "downtempo dub house". All of their albums are worth checking out but my two faves are "Swimming" which is a pretty chill album and "Octo Muck" which is on the house side. Needless to say, I am hooked and I had a tough time choosing one song from this album.

allmusic says:
Amidst heavy competition, Baby Mammoth is the Pork label's most prolific act, packing in five full LPs of blunted instrumental hip-hop between their debut in late 1996 and the end of the decade. Like other Pork acts Fila Brazillia and Solid Doctor, the duo of Mark Blissenden and Andrew Burdall specialize in earthy breaks and ambient atmospheres, more slanted to the instrumental edge of acid jazz than other producer-based trip-hop acts. The pair first met Pork label-head Dave Brennand and associate Steve Cobby (aka Fila Brazillia) at a club in Hull, where both band and label are based. The relationship blossomed with the release of Baby Mammoth's debut, 10,000 Years Beneath the Street, in 1996. Blissenden and Burdall then released two albums the following year (as well as an EP and single). Baby Mammoth settled down to a more languid release schedule with one LP release each year in 1998 (Another Day at the Orifice), 1999 (Swimming) 2000 (Motion Without Pain), and 2001 (Seven Up). After a year long break, the band returned with Octo Muck in 2003. A year later, Blissenden teamed with labelmates Steve Cobby and Robert Ellerby from Beige for the Fabric 18 mix CD.

LINK DAY....a new idea for this site

The first ever Silver's Boogaloo LINK DAY!

I have been getting a lot of emails from artists and labels who would have sent some great music for me to check out and possibly add to this site (I love that btw, keep em coming!). I have a lot that I have yet to go through but I do plan on listening to everything and I will add many of them to this site. However, I thought just for fun for one day I would let you pick what you what is posted so the fellow boogaloo posse and orchard lounge rejects from all over can download your picks. I thought this could be fun because the possibilities are endless as to what some of you weirdo's could submit and a long ass list of music links would make the work day fly by!
(PLEASE NOTE- If you send me a serious submission regarding your music I DO take it seriously and that does not have to be part of this and can be used in a real post in the future. )

soooooo....this is my idea:

a) YOU email a LINK of something you think would be fitting for this site. Actually, send whatever you want regardless of the style. It can be a demo from your band, it can be a DJ mix you saw online, it can be The Fat Boys eating pizza, it can be your answering machine message...I don't care. ANYTHING GOES nawmsayin?

b) The submission has to say "LINK DAY" in the subject heading so I can distinguish between links for this link day and normal submissions.
My email is bensilver at gmail

c)The ONLY rule is the link has to be for media that is already hosted online and active. That means if I add your link, an mp3/stream/video/photo/etc will download or play. If the link is to a site that has media than that is ok also. If you would like me to, I can use your name or I can leave it anonymous. You can also include text if you would like to accompany the link.

So if there is a DJ mix that you have been digging, a funny video that your office likes, or a track you have been working on and you would like to give it a test run, this is your chance. I am curious to see what you guys are into.

I will post all of the links on Monday, May 23

Pirate Radio Bootlegs

Mastermix-Rare Pirate Radio Bootlegs

Well, as you can see I am obsessed with the Old School and I have been scouring the online world to find sites like this Mastermix site. Sites filled with loads of mixes, videos, and other rare items from the parachute pant days are like the holy grail to me. I have already watched the BBC documentary on hiphop from 1984 enough times to memorize lines. As of 4:00 I am still the highest bidder on Uncle Rico's Time Machine which I am planning on using to zap back to 1982 so I can rock out at Planet Rock. In the meantime, relive the glory by downloading all of these rare radio mixes from the early '80's. Some are from NYC radio, a few are DMC battle sets, and the rest are misc. artifacts from a great period in American history. The music is all over the place and they don't discriminate when it comes to styles. Late disco, Mann Parrish style electro breaks, rock, jazz, and more. I wish the full live Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince live from Union Square was still available but it isn't(and yes, this is the same show used on "He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper" although this is the full 21 minutes so you havent heard it!)

Smells like drum and bass?

Nonex

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" MP3
"The Saw" MP3

Five years ago in Madison I picked up a cd by an artist I had never heard of. The cover said, "Ethereal Drum 'N' Bass", which jumped out at me so I checked it out. I had no idea know what ethereal dnb meant, but it sounded like something I would like. Nonex consists of keyboardists/programmers El Topo and Volker Bertelmann, drummer/programmer Piid and vocalists La Trek and Sam Leigh Brown. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1999 by Shadow Records.

The album is darker than the majority of "atmospheric dnb" releases of the late '90's/ early '00's. Some of the tracks have a glitchy, IDM feel which at times resembles Squarepusher or Amon Tobin. I used the song "Something For Your Mind" on a downtempo DJ mix I made and I decided to put up two more for you to check out. I couldn't pass on their Nirvana cover with the female vocalist but I don't feel it is a good representation of what the LP is like so I chose two.

Phazz-A-Delic

De-Phazz- "Detunized Gravity" MP3

Jazzy, electronic, downtempo, trip hop....whatever you want to call it, De-Phazz is quality. German musician Pit Baumgartner is the center of De-Phazz and Pit has done it all. Started off Dj'ing, has done remixes for everyone from Kool & the Gang feat. Lauryn Hill, Boy George, Kurtis Blow, A-ha, to Ella Fitzgerald (Verve USA). He owns record labels including Phazz-A-Delic records and he has been releasing great music with De-Phazz for years. De-Phazz is a proper balance of live instruments, dubby production techniques, and always features great guest musicians. All of their albums are worth checking out and there also is a "best of" out.

Words Like Weapons

So the members of the Orchard Lounge crew are very excited because we are booked to play at Camp Bisco which is a summer festival with many bands and DJ's. The stars of the show are a band that we have had many amazing experiences with, The Disco Biscuits, who will headline each night with their patented sound of techno-rock trance-fusion.

Here is the announcement

The band Brothers Past is also on the bill and they are not just a great band but are great people as well. I was lucky enough to be able to grace the decks in between their sets on NYE in Philly and they blew the roof off the sucka! Brothers Past has been touring relentlessly promoting their phenomenal new studio album, "This Feeling's Called Goodbye."

Brothers Past- "Words Like Weapons" MP3

I am completely blown away by what these guys can do in the studio. I am a sucker for a quality studio album because when you lock great musicians in a room with a bunch of toys and let them experiment you see what they are truly capable of. The album is not filled with long, noodly jams like some jamband albums. Instead it is packed with emotional lyrics and vocals, great melodies, and cool sounds. It is a very mature album and I think fans of many different styles of music, from indie rock to electronic, would find something they like.

Brothers Past's site says:

Some more information about This Feeling's Called Goodbye: It was produced and mixed by Jon Altschiller, who has worked with many great artists on numerous projects, including Lenny Kravitz (Live DVD), the Dave Matthews Band (Live at Red Rocks), Phish (Picture of Nectar and Rift), John Mayer (Any Given Thursday), Ben Folds Five (Naked Baby Photos) and the coming Simon and Garfunkel release. Mastered by the renown Fred Kevorkian with everyone present at his studio at Absolute Audio.

BUY the album from their site and check the tourdates because they will be coming to your town.

Conquering The Sun

Sieg Uber Die Sonne- +1 (Multicolor)

"Cleaning Windows" MP3

These days any time a sound emerges in the world of house music there is a new name for the genre. Tech house, tribal house, deep house, vocal house, blah blah blah. Now the choice word (for me to POOP on!) is "telectro" which is a fusion of tech house and electro. I love both styles but I don't see the need for another genre of house music. So just to challenge the labelers I chose a track that could be considered just about anything. It has funky guitars, a minimal beat, and quirky German electro-pop vocals.

German producers Sieg Uber Die Sonne have released some very interesting albums with a wide range of sounds. I used their slamming track "Hot" from the 2001 album, (-)x(-)=(+), on my most recent DJ mix, Warp Zone. You can download the mix from Orchardlounge.com In 2004 they released another mathematical themed album, +1, which is a nice blend of electro-pop vocal tracks and instrumental tech house songs. "You Better Send Me Home" is another solid track from the album that I was going to upload but the "cleaning windows" track is so bizarre that I had to use it. "Stop The Plug-ins" is a dark, driving techy track with a bassline that doesn't quit. The harder edged tracks they produce are a nice contrast to some of the lighter songs on the album

Forced Exposure said:
"Amazing, how clever Sieg Über Die Sonne arrange the sounds on their fourth album -- nearly 10 years after their debut. As if it is the most self-evident innovation in the musical world, +1 compresses the most moving dancefloor styles and renovates the greyed coating of Electrofunk almost in passing. Meanwhile both musicians Pink Elln and Dandy Jack (formerly with homebase Frankfurt) reside in Berlin, which one may notice by the first-class production of +1. The contact to Chilean Jorge González who wrote, sang and arranged all vocals on +1 -- partly live in the Sun Electric studio Berlin, partly via digital media, exists since the mid-Nineties and he already had given his voice to the club hits 'You'll Never Come Back' & 'I'm Not A Sound' (among others) from their third album = (+) (multiColor). Jorge's professional approach to melody lines is remarkable, as well as his charming handling of language."

L'usine vs. Snoop

L'usine and Snoop Dogg Mash-up
"It's Hot Like The Sun" MP3

"Drop it like it's hot" has been tired for a while but when layered over a track by Ghostly International's finest, L'usine, it sounds fresher than ever. This will be used in the next downtempo set I play for sure.

Daddy G

Daddy G- DJ Kicks (K7)

The Meters "Just Kissed My Baby >
Nusrat Fateh Ali-Kahn "Mustt Mustt" (Massive Attack Remix) MP3

The DJ Kicks series is one of my favorite compilations because I love just about every artist that has been chosen to make a mix. The purpose is for the artist to create a mix cd of tracks they love and not necassarily what is new and what they need to put out there. Kruder and Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation, Chicken Lips, all the way to Underworld have contributed mixes to K7. New Order and many others have created mixes for the "Back To Mine" series which is the same idea and is equaly good. The newest was compiled by Daddy G, a founding member of Massive Attack. I love his mix because it is loaded with dub tracks, both old and new. He also uses quite a few Massive Attack remixes which perfectly compliment the dub and reggae. He rounds out the album with tracks by ranging from Aretha Frankilin to Lil Kim.

I really like this review of the CD: RIGHT HERE

Fela

Fela Kuti-The Underground Spiritual Game Mixed By Chief Xcel

"Look and Laugh" MP3

Fela Kuti is one of my all time favorite artists. This pioneer of Afrobeat music also was a man with a message. His music was the medium he used to carry his political viewpoints. If you are not familiar with Fela Kuti I highly suggest taking some time and learning about his life. For a music class in college I wrote a thesis comparing Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, and Marvin Gaye by the messages in their music. Whether it be his 40 wives, getting arrested countless times for smoking marijuana in public, or performing in his underwear, Fela was a character. This new album released on Quannum features some of his finer moments mixed together by Chief Xcel. Since many of his songs were over 15 minutes long, Xcel takes segments from various songs and pieces them together.

Pitchfork said:
"The Underground Spiritual Game is an unbroken set of Kuti's music taken from throughout his career, meticulously compiled and mixed by Chief Xcel. Xcel is one half of Blackalicious, a hip-hop act that have themselves begun realizing the full potential of discourse inherent in their genre, and Xcel hopes to continue making his way through Fela Kuti's enormous output. Though touted as a "remix" of Kuti's work, The Underground Spiritual Game leaves the original sounds relatively untouched. Instead, Chief Xcel seamlessly melds selections from 11 of Kuti's tracks, occasionally adding effects, and inserting spoken snippets of Fela speaking. It's put together in a manner that stands as a testament to Kuti's political views, but pays equal homage to his musical impact."

Misch Masch

Tiefschwarz- Misch Masch

"Unit Four-Body Dub (Tiefschwarz Remix)MP3"

The Orchard Lounge households have always loved Tiefschwarz. "Thru A Little Window" was one of the tracks that always would be played if we were DJ'ing or just at home hanging out. Their original tracks and remixes are always great. Fast, funky, and always fun to listen to. Ali and Basti Schwarz who are Tiefschwarz have been generating a nice buzz in the last year or so. In 2004 they released a double cd comp containing a mixed cd and a cd of their remixes.

"Disc 1 of Misch Masch is a colorfully vivid exploration into the brothers' celebrated styling of minimal electro tech/house. Overflowing with deep and rumbling techno tracks from Derrick May, Drama Society, Kiki, and many more, Tiefschwarz most certainly brings the throbbing Berlin club experience directly to the listener. The transitions are not as extensive as a standard DJ mix might normally be, but the showcase here appears to be on the individual tracks themselves.

Disc 2 is a non-mixed collection of distinguished Tiefschwarz remixes and kicks off with their electro-groovy take on Micatone's Plastic Bags & Magazines. The compilation furthers itself by spotlighting the duo's (often funky) tech remixes of Truby Trio, Hell, DJ Tal, Unit 4, amid others; shining remixes include Lopazz - Blood, Tiefschwarz - Blow (Dub), and Lost n Alive - Feels Like Love. Both compilations are extremely well produced and arranged; fans of Tiefschwarz will be proud to add Misch Masch to their collection."

2 new live sets to download

The Bays- Live at Jazz Cafe London 2005
You have to register with an email address so do it and grab this show. They have otehr mp3 shows as well and each is has a unique sound. The Bays are one of my favorite live-electronic all improv bands. They do not record, do not have set song structures, and they say they do not rehearse. They sound just like a DJ and it is all on the the fly. The keyboard player, Jamie Odell, also owns Freerange records. I have posted about them in the past.

The other:

BIG BUD- Feb 2005 DJ MIX
My main man BIG BUD who just put a DJ mix online. Big Bud is one of my favorite drum and bass producers. He incorporates dnb, dub, and downtempo into his work and his album on Good Looking "Infinity plus Infinity" is one of my all time faves. Sound-Trax has all of his info including samples of his new double-cd set he is puttng out!!! I can't wait for that!Apparently one disc is nasty dnb and the other dub and other beats.

Serial Hodgepodge

Lusine- Serial Hodgepodge

"Ask You" MP3

Many of the posts I have made lately feature German or UK based labels so I thought I would American this time. Ghostly International which is based out of Michigan is one of America's top labels for abstract electronic music that touches on many different genres. Matthew Dear and Dabrye are two of the more popular artists on the label but the guy who has been does it for me the most is Lusine. His most recent LP, Serial Hodgepodge is an amazing release and the track hosted is one I would play early on in one of my downtempo DJ sets.

Ghostly said:

"After relatively low-profile full-lengths on labels such as Isophlux and Hymen, Lusine (sometimes known as L’usine or Lusine Icl) releases his most accomplished album to date on Ghostly. Jeff McIlwain, the man behind Lusine, continues to shame the bloated IDM market with beats that kick and hiccup under fluttering melodies, confidently exhibiting the power of suggestion rather than overt display, in arrangements thick with emotion and complexity.

Serial Hodgepodge serves as a defining fusion of instinct and intellect, as the sense of funk and dance genres in Lusine’s meticulous programming prohibit anyone from sitting still, while the myriad other elements flickering across the mix offer great things to those who read between the lines. The range of moods amongst the album’s tracks also suggest an inextricable link to the psychological strength of music. Percussive hits converse with one another while vocal samples pique the individualistic responses of a Rorschach test.

Previously, the music of Lusine was treasured only by those fortunate enough to have discovered it; with Serial Hodgepodge, McIlwain’s talents will undoubtedly find a larger, more eclectic and responsive audience. Hodgepodge offers not only something to immediately captivate anyone who hears it, but also innumerable layers of detail to be discovered through dozens of listens, placing it among the most wholly rewarding albums to be found in any genre in recent memory."

The Chocolate Elvis Dubs

Tosca- The Chocolate Elvis Dubs

"Chocolate Elvis (Baby Mammoth Version 3)"

For me it gets no better than the masters of downtempo, Kruder and Dorfmeister. They have influenced just about anybody who is affiliated with the downtempo scene whether it is a producer, DJ, or just the blunted guy stuck to his couch. The K+D Sessions album is still one of the top downtempo releases of all time. Aside from DJ'ing, remixing, and releasing countless quality albums on their g-stone recordings label together, they also have multiple side projects that are just as good.

One of the side projects for Richard Dorfmeister is Tosca which also includes Rupert Huber. The duo released the singles "Chocolate Elvis" and "Fuck Dub" in 1996. A triple-pack of remixes -- from Fila Brazillia, Baby Mammoth and others -- appeared in early 1997. Tosca has put out many other "must have" albums but I will get to that in some other post in the future. The other side project, Peace Orchestra, is also too good to lump into one post. The track I chose is the one of the Baby Mammoth remixes which I really like.

Here is a bonus video clip of the K+D 2001 summer sessions

new NIN track

NIN- "the line begins to blur" leaked track from With Teeth

I had a major NIN phase in high school and look forward to seeing them again live. NIN is one of the most powerful live acts out there and had the same effect on me that Radiohead does. Here is a track from the forthcoming "With Teeth" album that was leaked out. Can't wait to hear the full album when it comes out.

Hello Stranger

Kaos- Hell Stranger (K7)

I have been streaming this album all week at work and I like it a lot. Daniel Wang and Erlend Oye are on the album and people were telling me it is like Metro Area with vocals so I knew I needed it. Click the link and you can listen to the entire album and also purchase it through mp3 downloads.

K7 says:

When you hear „Hello Stranger“ for the first time, you might think that Kaos is a new music group. All the ingredients that shape the sound of a band are here: Live drums, an electric bass, guitars, live percussions and keyboards. And, the voices of real singers.

But you only have to add the prefix „DJ“ to the name Kaos to realise what this is: the new album by the Berlin DJ Kaos. The legendary master of the wheels of steel, former member of Terranova and initiator of the infamous Ghost Cauldron project now returns as Kaos with his most mature solo effort to date.

To define ‘’Hello Stranger’’ as a typical DJ album would be wrong. The beats are groovy but not linear, the tunes are stretched but less tracks than proper songs. For the album, Kaos was looking for new challenges. Because sampling as we know it, is dead. This is especially the case for a producer like Kaos who has been working with sample based music for over a decade and for whom the collaboration with real musicians presented a new, exciting perspective. Kaos engaged various musician friends and singers. Names like Erlend Øye, Daniel Wang, Khan and Snax from Captain Comatose, Matt B. Safer from The Rapture, the performance artist Namosh, Nicole from Electrocute, Boy from Brazil, Eddy Cooper or Jason Friedman from the New York punk rockers The Boggs appear on the album.

For the recordings, the individual collaborators met with Kaos in his studio where they jammed (in the traditional sense) off of Kaos’ own rhythm and harmony structures. The vocals on the album were generated in a similar way: Kaos hummed a melody, language fragments were played around with and after a few tries a real song was born. Afterwards, Kaos arranged everything on his computer.

Musically, ‘’Hello Stranger’’ has a very versatile sound. However using average genre definitions is problematic. The sound of Kaos is somewhere between disco, New York white funk, Italo and rock. Kaos stated that „the album is a ‘good time album’, one that you can have fun with both at home on the couch, as well as in the club on the dancefloor“. „Hello Stranger“ is a proper Berlin album. Except for the two New Yorker guest musicians Matt B. Safer and Jason Friedman all the other artists involved call Berlin their home. The album presents an informed illustration of the current developments in today’s most exciting music-capital in the world.

Last but not least, the album elegantly reflects the sound that Kaos has been cultivating for years as a DJ. It is a sound that equally features the sound of yesterday and today, where the golden Glimmer Twins motto „Where The Past Presents The Future“ rules. Based on the solid conviction that music is a medium that can independently transcend all chronological and genre related definitions, what counts is simply the good vibe, the good groove and the uniqueness of sound.

All of this can be drawn from „Hello Stranger“. It´s DJ Kaos` own “Roots Music “ album which propagates “back to music“: far away from trends and clichés the only thing that counts is good music. The album´s title is based on a song by Marianne Faithfull, which she took from the legendary New Orleans icon Dr. John. Ms. Faithfull´s album was also an attempt to get „Back To The Roots“. Kaos has brilliantly mastered the cultivation of this principle on his new album.

Jeremy "Ayro" Ellis LIVE SET

Jeremy "AYRO" Ellis- Live Set (Streaming from brokenbeatradio.com)

I love this guy and he has a new album coming out on Ubiquity Records called, Lotus Blooms. I do not have it yet but am looking forward to picking it up. You may recall I posted about him in the past and hosted his note for note interpretation of a Herbie Hancock classic.
From Brokenbeatradio:
AYRO (LIVE) - June 28, 2004 This week the Federation and BrokeN'Beat radio bring you very hot live recording from May 7th at the Mission in NYC. Armed with an arsenal of electronics and keyboards, Ayro comes to bring it... all freestyle... without a net. A packed house got down to the electronic, the love, and the funk, the likes of which they will not soon forget. Apologies for the contagious mis-pronounciations of people's names that was going on that night. Ayro's live sets are legendary. They include shows at the Detroit Electronic Music festival in 2001 and 2003, playing with Jazzanova and Koop, headlining with Kyoto Jazz Massive in Tokyo, and rocking all-night block parties on the streets of Puerto Rico. He broke out worldwide as a solo artist in 2001 turning the heads of selectors such as Gilles Peterson, Dj Spinna, Jazzanova and countless others. His new album ElectronicLovefunk is a raw, experimental and eclectic fusion of soul, jazz and techno filled with sweet vocals and lush polyrhthyms. You can pick up this essential record at Dustygroove.com.

a proper downtempo album by a jamband

STS9- Artifact

"Tokyo (radio edit)"

I have featured many of the new-school, electronic style jambands on this site. Disco Biscuits, Lotus, Brothers Past, The New Deal, The Bays, The Egg, and more. Each of them has their own style and some have vocals which could lead into a 20 minute techno, house, drum and bass, or even a dub jam. Others play all instrumental live electronic music with the focus on their improvisation skills. Another band that I have liked for a while is Sound Tribe Sector Nine or STS9. This band has evolved a lot over the last few years and now has more of a "live downtempo" sound rather than only rocking instrumental jams. Now, they still are a jamband but they have been mixing it up and adding some new effects and techniques that I really like. They have been doing less improv, and more beat-oriented songs with the laptops. This is something that some of their older fans are not happy about because some of their jams do not rock as hard or peak like they may have in the past, however other people (like me) love the new direction and change.

First of all the drummer, Zach Velmer, is a MACHINE. In my opinion he is the leader of the band and he can bang out drum and bass beats that will make you think they are programmed. Maybe he is a robot, who knows, but I guarantee if you see them live he will blow your mind. The guitar player, bass player and keyboard player have all added laptops with programs like Reason 2.5 running which they use to add samples, loops, and other sounds which give the sound a more "electronic" feel. They have also played sets with an all midi electronic setup which is drums, keys, and laptops only and no guitar. They are going to be playing a "live pa" style set like this at the WMC along with LTJ Bukem and many other D'N'B artists one day and they are playing with Mark Farina another night.

You can stream and also download shows from archive.org and here is the link to a show where they played an all electronic set: 10/31/04

So this leads me to their best work yet which is their new studio album, "Artifact". The album has the same feel as any K+D, Tosca, Dzihan and Kamien release. Deep, melodic grooves with great effects on the live instruments they use. I am really, really impressed by this album and I am excited that this band put out an electronic dowtempo album this good. I think this release is as good as many of the downtempo albums that I love and use to DJ. This is one step closer to a fusion between the jamband fans and the clubbers. The track I posted is the radio edit and the album version is much longer.

Read more about STS9 HERE and check the tour dates because they are great live.

Old School Gems

THE BOX! Hip Hop Archive

Ok, I could easily have posted a couple mp3's of some old school Fat Boys if I wanted to. Or maybe hit you with some rare EPMD or live LL Cool J...shiiiit....I could have posted some classic battles from the 80's.

But

Rather than given you an appetizer I decided to take you to the Sbarro $3.99 ALL YOU CAN EAT!!! NAWMSAYIN? Today I received an email that literally made my day. It was a link to "The Box" which is an old school site filled with mp3's, videos, photos, and bio's with some of my favorite old school rappers. I may be a white kid who grew up in Wisconsin but I still am a certified old school junkie. I can still recite all of LL's "Radio", I know just about every line (including the lyrics to every song) of both Breakin' movies, and a friend and I once transcribed every line to each of the LL VS. Kool Moe Dee battle songs...and this was WAY before the OHHLA "Jack The Ripper" is on the site and I just listened to it 4 times in a row! I used to think if I could build a time machine to go back in time to see the concert of my choice I would see The Dead 5/8/77, or maybe Derek and The Dominos, or Grant Green Live at the Lighthouse. Well, now I think I would zip back to the early 80's and see the oldest of the old school like a Planet Rock party or maybe the first Def Jam tour with Run DMC, Beastie Boys, and crew.

CRUSHIN!

GREAT COMMERCIAL!

I will post later but just saw this great ad and thought I would share. His moves look like David Elsewhere's. Hopefully this will be on during the Super Bowl.

Hasidic HipHop Reggae

"Chop Em Down"
"Father In The Forest"
Video with history and live footage
There are so many Reggae artists who praise jah and preach about their love of about the ganja. Matthew Miller AKA Matisyahu has a different message:

"Me no want no sinsemilla.
That would only bring me down
Burn away my brain no way my brain is to compound
Torah food for my brain let it rain till I drown
Thunder!
Let the blessings come down"

Matisyahu was raised by Dead-heads and later became a dread locked Phish tour kid, however he wanted something different out of life. He truly found himself when he moved to Israel and he spent his time, praying, exploring, and dancing in Jerusalem. In every nook he encountered, his dormant Jewish identity stirred into consciousness. When he returned he studied up on reggae and hip-hop. He attended a weekly open-mic where he rapped, sang, beat-boxed, and did almost anything he could to stay creatively charged. It was then that he started to develop the unique reggae-hip hop sound for which he would one day become known. I was turned on to Matisyahu when I was forwarded THIS VIDEO with some really nice beatboxing, singing, and an interview from the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

Get Physical

DJ T "Time Out (Random Factor Mix)" (Get Physical Music)

I think it is safe to say that last year Kompakt was the "It" label. Friends who don't ever listen to minimal techno and tech house were randomly asking me what I thought of the new Michael Mayer album. Maybe it was the saturation of magazine articles about the German label combined with the virtual blowjobs that Pitchfork gave the label on a regular basis. Regardless, Kompakt was hot last year and this year the new label of choice is the German "Get Physical Music" label. I can honestly say I haven't been so excited about the future of a house label than I am for GPM right now. The fusion of minimal house music and melodic techno, a healthy dose of the TB-303, and a tease of electro are the perfect ingredients. I will probably wear out all of my GPM 12"'s and the new LP by Booka Shade titled "Memento" hasn't left my car in weeks. The track I put up is a remix of DJ T's "Time Out" by another one of my favorite producers, Random Factor.

from Get Physical Music:
In 2002 Thomas Koch (aka DJ T) founded Get Physical Music together with a couple of friends. The Berlin based label is a collective, which consists of six people who have proved to be very dynamic in the electronic music scene for a long time. The dj-and producer-duo Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung as well as the three-headed team of producers Booka Shade (Walter Merzinger, Arno Kammermeier, Peter Hayo) have been active together for more than 10 years, whilst releasing projects on labels like R&S (Degeneration), Harthouse (Synesthasia), Touché (Booka Shade) and Tommy Boy (Oakland Stroke). Bodmer and Jung have become well-known as M.A.N.D.Y. most of all through their remixes.

It doesn't get much better than Get Physical!

King Tut

Paul Hardcastle- King Tut MP3

One of my all time favorite styles of music is the old school electrofunk. I can still recite most of the lines from both of the Breakin' movies and I made a DJ mix titled "Linoleum Streets" which is all breakdance/electro tracks from 1982-1985. You can download it HERE Of all of the artists of that era, my favorite has got to be Paul Hardcastle. The keyboard master and producer from London dropped some of the best early 80's dance tracks to ever burn up the roller rinks. "19", "Rainforest", "Forest Fire", "Central Park", "Sound Chaser", and "King Tut" are all JAMS! I added "King Tut" which is a track I did not use on my "Linoleum Streets" mix. "King Tut" was a 12" and also is on his fantastic self titled LP from 1985.

Coping through music

Lindsey Green- "Devastation"

Soundclick- Lindsey Green (the track is "devastation" and I also love the track "morhine drip")

Everybody deals with pain, sadness, and tragedy a different way. The effects of the Tsunami are beyond belief and my thoughts and prayers go out to everybody affected. One way to cope with sadness is by channeling through art. Some of the best art ever created was inspired by grief and despression. Blues music was founded on sorrow and look how many rock and roll songs were written after a band member died or a wife ran off. I was sent an email from my good friend and also talented musician, David Hammond, about a track a friend of his created about the Tsunami.

David writes:
"every now and then, you stumble across something so beautiful, so ingenius, so sublime, that you just have to share it with everyone that you think might understand. this song was written, only a few days ago, about the tsunami that caused so much suffering, by a producer who is far, far beyond his time. i bow down to this guy and only hope that one day, i will be able to capture the raw power, energy, beauty, and grace that he can capture in a single, solitary afternoon. i don't know which is more amazing -- that he actually wrote this song (in a day, i might add) --or that i'm probably the only person he bothered to tell about it."

Charge Me Up

Chris Price- Charge Me Up

Well, I broke my iRiver mp3 recorder so I am unable to rip any of my records to mp3 to put on the site until it is repaired. However, since setting up this website I have been contacted by many musicians and labels who have been sending me music over email which is great. Chris Price is an independent electronic/synthpop artist from the D.C. area who contacted me after grabbing some of my DJ mixes from this site. This track is on his forthcoming EP, The Identity Crisis.

Washington Post said:
"Chris Price is a local artist with a wide spectrum of musical influences. His latest offering combines 1980’s electronic and new wave with elements of modern pop. Synth layers and driving beats provide a showcase for Price’s unique vocal styling.
Inspired by the forward-thinking artists and producers of the late 1970s and early 1980s, Price delivers a sound that spans genres and timelines. Fans have compared Price’s work to the likes of The Cars, New Order, Gary Numan, and Devo.
Keep your eye on this innovative composer, producer, and performer."

"Hip Bop"

DJ Krush and Toshinori Kondo- Ki Oku

Sun Is Shining MP3

I was just relaxing on this fine Sunday to the mellow sounds of one of my favorite albums, Ki-Oku. It had been a while since I had listened to it and it was every bit as good as I remembered. The album, a fusion of hiphop and jazz, features DJ Krush's stylized hiphop-ish beats and Kondo layering Miles Davis sounding jazz trumpet riffs on top. The pair complement each other perfectly and this album is a fantastic blend of mellow, downtempo beats with a psychedelic jazzy feel. All of DJ Krush's albums sounds different, with some featuring guest vocalists supplying rhymes and other's with guest musicians but none set the mood like this one. Highly recomended listening.

Brothers Past and Lotus NYE

Brothers Past- Live 10/24/03 MP3's

So this NYE should be a great one. I am flying to Philly to catch some shows on the 29th and the 30th and them I am DJ'ing on NYE at the TLA which is a nice sized venued. The two bands I am playing with are Lotus and Brothers Past. Both hail from Philly and both bands play their own version of live electronic music...in one shape or another. I am going to be playing a variety of styles of music ranging all the way from Downtempo to Tech House and I will be spinning before the show, between bands, and at setbreak.

The Lotus website says: "Lotus is a five-piece instrumental band based in Philadelphia. Their music is heavily tempered by electronic styles such as deep house and drum n' bass, but inside the sonic layers seep heavy doses of funk, jazz, and world music. Their high-energy live shows feature tightly composed material balanced with stretched out improvisation. The sounds shift from spiritual and meditative, to jubilant and energetic, from dark dance floor burners, to spaced-out waves of ambience." They also have a great new album out titled, "Nomad", that I highly recommend checking out. There also is a cool live video on their site.

Read more about Brothers Past HERE The band is a nice mix of indie rock vocals and nasty drum and bass, house, and other electronic style jamming. They have a wide array of toys including crazy synths, Laptops, and Kaoss pads that they use to warp the sounds and their drummer is an absolute machine. At times you you will not believe a human is dropping the beats you hear. Along with their own great originals you may even catch a Radiohead, Cure, or even a cover of The Clash but with their own twist. You can also grab the all instrumental "Dance Sampler" at this site HERE

A classic Ninja Tune

Bonobo- Dial M For Monkey

"Pick Up" MP3

I have been quite busy the last couple weeks hence the limited number of posts. I am looking forward to a NYE DJ gig in Philly playing before and between sets of the bands Lotus and Brothers Past at the TLA. More about that later. I had a Chrismukkah dinner tonight with Ninja Tune's finest, Bonobo, playing softly in the background. I never seem to get tired of his music and it is a staple in any downtempo set I play. I also have used his tracks on downtempo mixes which you can find on the OrchardLounge site.

NinjaTune says:
From the opener, "Noctuary," with it’s creepy stoned-Hammer feel, through the headnod sitar-funk of "Flutter," on into the Rhodes-meets-Gamelan of "D Song," the first third of the record sets out the tone for what is to follow – all beautfiully melodic and perfectly assembled but with enough of a creeping undertow to stop the music becoming empty or saccharine. "Change Down" is all double bass folk and cut-up drums, "Wayward Bob" is a devilish waltz, while single "Pick Up" is a straight funk ‘n’ flute throw down. "Something For Windy"sounds like a dub of a postman on his rounds, "Nothing Owed" is epic pastoralia, while "Light Pattern" rounds things off with what sounds like the theme to the best TV programme never made.

With all instruments played, sampled and sequenced by Green’s own fair hand, there is a consistency here, both within the tunes and across the record that crate diggers can only dream of. There is real development, the building of moods and feelings, a genuine attempt to make great music which is incidentally computer music. He may make a monkey of himself, but he’s no musical mug…

Kevin Yost

Kevin Yost- One Starry Night

"Outa Space" MP3

Kevin Yost is a rare breed- Jazz musician, house producer, and amazing DJ. There are many producers who also DJ but are not very good it, Yost is not one of them. Every time I have seen him play his mixing is beyond belief and that is because he has been DJ'ing since he was a little kid. Another reason I respect him is because when he plays out he can fill an entire set with original tracks and remixes he has done. Some of his tracks are borderline jazz with a house beat, others are on the techy side with nice keyboard riffs throughout. Don't be fooled by the jazz however, Yost can bang out the main room like the best of them.

When the producer is an accomplished musician it makes the sound so nice and rich. You can hear his musical talent oozing out of every drum beat and piano solo. In a time when anybody can make beats on their computer it is nice to hear someone like Kevin Yost who is a true musician recording the old fashioned way.
Check out his website, kevinyost.com for more info and make sure to pick up his albums. "One Starry Night" and "Road Less Traveled" are two of my all time favorite house albums.

Welcome Tourist

B Fleischmann- Welcome Tourist (Morr Music) 2003

"Grunt" MP3

Bernhard Fleischmann "wants to criticize a state of mind that subordinates human beings to a logic of economic utilization." An interesting statement to say the least and his music I guess could be deemed political....if it had words. B Fleischmann's music is primarily instrumental and is in the same class as Fourtet, Squarepusher, and Amon Tobin, which many people label as IDM. Fleischmann uses melodic piano riffs to balance out static sounds and drill-and-bass style drum programming on some of the tracks. The album has moments that make me feel like I am listening to Kid A without the vocals and remixed by Fourtet. My favorite tracks on the album start out slighlty dissonant with odd effects and end up as soothing, jazzy compositions.

Insanely good house mix

Only have a few minutes so I need to make this quick-

I featured DJ INC a couple weeks ago on this site and he just dropped a new mix on PROTONRADIO

He played one set of dub/downtempo and another which is an amazing tech house mix that was recorded live at his Tempo night in Atlanta. This house mix is so good! I was listening at work and my computer was about ready to blow up. I personally think this mix rivals any mix from the Fabric series.

Below The Bassline

Ernest Ranglin- Below The Bassline (Island Jamaica Jazz)

Surfin' MP3

I love jazz guitar and also good roots dub albums so when I first listened to Ernest Ranglin I knew I was in for a treat. Ranglin was born in Jamaica in 1932 and was influenced by the American Jazz guitar great, Charlie Christian as well as all of the Caribbean styles of music. He began to make his mark with Clu J's Blues Blasters. He was there when the very first Ska recordings were made. He would go on to play an important role with the Skatalites, help define the Treasure Isle Rock Steady sound, blaze a new trail for a style called Reggae with Studio One and influence the success of Jamaican music all around the world. And while all this was going on...Ernest Ranglin would also become known, on a world-wide basis, as one of the greatest Jazz guitarists of all time.

In 1996 he released "Below The Bassline" which is a collection of classic Jamaican songs played to perfection by his amazing lineup of musicians including Idris Muhammed on drums. Ranglin's amazing guitar playing perfectly compliments Ira Colman's dub basslines creating a Jamaican jazzy sound.

You can buy this album anywhere and you can read more about Ranglin HERE

Secret Frequency Crew

Secret Frequency Crew- Forest Of The Echo Downs (Schematic)

"Neon Bridge" MP3

One of the best downtempo/IDM albums I have all year is the debut album by Secret Frequency Crew (thanks for the recomendation sk8s) They have just the right blend of organic, analog sounds and mechanical, glitchy madness. The album is very Shpongle-esque (I bet a few people know what that means) This track is featured on my new, new downtempo dj mix that I haven't uploaded yet.

Boomkat Says:
DJs Matthew Brown, Matt Friedman, and Adrian Michna have been operating under the Secret Frequency Crew banner for some time, taking in deep, atmospheric instrumental electronica with a love of 80's melodies and a crafted blend of guitars, trombones, bass and piano thrown in for widescreen listening. "Forest Of The Echo Downs" also at times delves into more complex, heavily percussive territory and reduced digital territory, sizzling into the twilight.

Available at most shops.
